It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage. Central Market is in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and strategically located with public transportation links to all major destinations and hotels while the KL Sentral railway station is only 1 ½ km away. The KL Sentral railway station provides fast and convenient connections to most parts of Kuala Lumpur as well as to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Malaysia is well known for her multi-racial culture where people of different races live in peace and perfect harmony. Central Market has created a corner to display multi ethnicity and zoned the stalls based on the features of each race. The new zone therefore would consist of 3 lanes: namely the Lorong Melayu, Straits Chinese and Lorong India. The purpose of this new zone is to let the visitors have an insight of the cultural difference of the various races in Malaysia.

There’s also a Malacca Jonker street –a street featuring double storey and single storey Baba-Nyonya styled architectural buildings, a Batik Emporium which houses well known designer labels with the best Malaysian made batik items ranging from clothes, shoes, bags to home finishing.

Central Market is a one stop shopping centre for Malaysian products such as handicrafts, art, kebaya, songket, batik and the wide variety of Malaysian cuisine. Efforts to improvise and upgrade facilities in Central Market also include having a wider variety of F & B outlets such as Secret Recipe, Old Town Kopitiam, Kings Confectionary, Famous Amos, Precious Restaurant (Traditional Baba Nyonya Cuisine) , Ginger Restaurant (Traditional Malaysian Thai Cuisine) and many more.

Not to forget, the colorful Malaysian Traditional Cultural and Arts events are now held at the Central Market Outdoor Stage. Central Market celebrates all the Traditional Festival of each race in Malaysia such as Hari Raya Festival, Chinese New Year Festival, Deepavali Festival, Punjabi Festival and lots more. Other than the traditional cultural events, Central Market supports the local contemporary arts such as Art Exhibition, Video Screening, Independent Music Concert and lots more in The Annexe Gallery.

The proposed exercise is to give Central Market, a building with a 120 years history a new identity to attract younger generations to appreciate the need for racial tolerance and the need for racial integration. As we all know, Central Market is a historic landmark of Kuala Lumpur and there can be no other better place to remind the younger generations of the Malaysian Culture that has been so entrenched that people of all races can come together to live in peace and harmony.

Key Tips

Central Market is situated at the border of Chinatown, so it would be a good idea to wind-up with a walking tour of Chinatown at Central Market, where you can find some air-conditioning and a refreshing drink.

How to get there

By Foot or Taxi
Central Market is on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, opposite the Klang Bus Stand.

By Train
The Pasar Seni station on the PUTRA LRT line is right outside Central Market.

Who to contact

For more information, please contact Central Market Management at 0320310399/5399/7399/9399. Food is plentiful here with many scrumptious varieties to choose from; some of the restaurants here have been in business for generations. Locals flock to Petaling Street primarily for bargain accessories and great Chinese food. So, go on, be brave - head down to Petaling Street with an empty stomach and an adventurous spirit. Even if you don't spend a penny, (which will be hard!), you are guaranteed to have an amazing experience here.

At the end of Petaling Street, you can further explore the Chan See Shu Yuen Temple which dates back to 1906. The interior of this building features open courtyard pavilions, intricate carvings and paintings. On the exterior, the temple depicts elaborate glazed ceramic sculptures which grace the facade and roof ridges.

For more adventurous tourists, further down from Petaling Street is the South Indian Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. This temple is situated at Jalan Tun H.S.Lee which is within walking distance from Chinatown. Built in 1873, the temple is said to be the most ornate and elaborate Hindu temple in the country. The design and decorative features include intricate carvings of Hindu deities, gold embellishments, precious stones and hand-painted motifs. Exquisite Italian and Spanish tiles provide further ornamentation. A silver chariot housed within the premises features prominently in religious processions, transporting the statue of the deity through the city streets.

Outside the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple are stalls selling garlands and strings of sweet smelling jasmine. Additionally, the strong aroma of Chinese traditional herbs and that of freshly brewed coffee waft through the air from across the street.

Key Tips

If you would like to visit the temples, they are only open during the day. However, the best food and shopping is available at night.

How to get there

By Foot or Taxi
Petaling Street is opposite the Kotaraya Shopping Complex and Central Market.

By Train
The Pasar Seni station on the PUTRA LRT down the street from the beginning of Petaling Street.

Who to contact

For more information, please contact the Kuala Lumpur Tourist Office Tel: +603-2615 8188 Tourism Infoline : 1-300-88-5776

Accommodation Overview

Kuala Lumpur offers a full range of accommodation, from basic backpacker's hostels to 5-star hotels.

Tourism Malaysia : Destinations : Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC

Tourism Malaysia : Destinations : Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC

The 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, otherwise known as KLCC the world's tallest twin structures.

Located in the heart of the capital city, the crown of the Kuala Lumpur contains a complex of office buildings, conference halls, a sprawling park and an upmarket shopping complex.

Inspired by the geometric shape found in Islamic architecture, this gleaming mega-structure was designed by Argentinian-American architect Cesar Pelli.

Stretching out to one side of this architectural masterpiece is the spacious and beautifully landscaped KLCC Park.

Other attractions at KLCC are Suria Shopping Complex, Petronas Philharmonic Hall, Petrosains Science Centre, Petronas Art Gallery and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, where The Aquaria Oceanarium is situated.

Those interested in visiting the sky bridge where admission is free, have to queue up for tickets. Patong has the most vibrant nightlife in the whole of Phuket. Pubs, restaurants, go-go bars and discotheques are dispersed all over a 3,000 meter long beach front. The greatest concentration of night places are in Soi Bangla, where pubs with live music, bars with local entertainers and an important choice of excellent restaurants can be found.

Karon Beach is a lot quieter than Patong and is the second largest tourist beach in Phuket. A long and broad almost unspoiled beach with a very white sand can be enjoyed there. A superb coral reef is extending towards Kata and Bu Island at the southern point. Restaurants, bars and tour companies, but also non-hotel businesses are located at the north end.

Phuket has its own International airport and can be reached directly from overseas or from Bangkok with a 70 minutes flight.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/travel-articles/guest-house-phuket-what-beach-is-best-for-a-vacation-in-phuket-thailand-1410144.html

Phuket Guest House and Beach - Pt 2

The most popular beaches are located in Bang Tao, Kamala, Karon, Kata and Patong. Phuket also hosts one of the most famous International soccer 7s tournament in south-east Asia in November.

Bangtao beach is one of the longest beach in Phuket and a luxury resort area dominated by a Laguna complex, a massive luxury-hotel development with golf course. It is challenging, adventurous and exiting. It can be enjoyed by almost anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy, whether you are young or old, male or female. There are countless options on how and where to do it. Backpacking is a great way to get some exercise and get fit while having some fun at the same time. Read on if you would like to learn more about backpacking for beginners and what it is all about.

Backpacking is the combination between hiking and camping. Backpacking trips involve hiking through the countryside and wilderness areas and camping overnight. A backpacker has to carry everything they need on their back in a rucksack. A backpacking trip can be short or long depending on the individual; you can stay away for one night or for weeks at a time if you want to.

The longer the trip the more that must be packed and carried, so having a backpacking gear list and planning both the packing and the trip is essential. Some areas that are very popular backpacking destinations will have camp sites set up. They may simply have a fire ring and posted maps or they can have cabins, as well as a pitch for tents and a toilet and shower block. Other areas may have nothing at all and backpackers set up their camp wherever they find a good spot.

There is a community in backpacking. Everyone works together to preserve the wilderness that they love. There are certain accepted and unaccepted behaviors in backpacking. Backpackers try not to disturb or damage the area they travel in. They clean up all traces of their camp and never litter or take anything along their travels. The one thing you are allowed to take is photographs, so a small lightweight camera can form part of your backpacking checklist.

Backpacking requires a person to keep safety in mind always. There are many hazards in backpacking and a person who does not think about being safe is sure to fall prey. The backpack itself can pose problems if a person does not learn how to fit it and pack it properly. The physical activity can be strenuous and a person must be conditioned to handle walking through uneven and rough terrain. Basic first aid and general idea of wilderness safety are other things a backpacker must know. It is easy to get lost and hurt in the wilderness, so every backpacker must have a good handle on staying safe.

People backpack for different reasons. Some do it for the excellent exercise. Some people like backpacking because of the adventure and love of nature. Others backpack as a way to learn and explore the outdoors. Whatever reason people backpack, there are large numbers of them and they continue to explore, love and walk through the wilderness with the common goal of a good backpacking experience.

This is just an outline of the basics of backpacking for beginners, there is a lot more to learn such as how to pack a backpack properly, how to choose the right backpacking cookware and knowing the right backpacking supplies to take. There are many good books on backpacking and I would recommend that you read through one and get a good knowledge of the backpacking basics before you set out on your own adventure. This way you should have a safe and exiting backpacking experience rather than one that you will remember for all the wrong reasons.

Written by Mike Legg

Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - Backpacking for Beginners, the Backpacking Basics

10 Money Tips for Your Backpacking Trip

1. Plan a realistic budget for the amount of time you'll be away. A budget will help you save more money that could be better spent on activities and treats for yourself.

2. Since the bulk of your expenses will go towards travel tickets, food and accommodation, it pays to research how much things will cost at your destination cities. In some instances, hostels and other shared accommodation will charge a cheaper rate if you book or pay in advance.
3. Visit cheap countries! Countries in South East Asia will generally cost you less than cities in Europe, which means you can spend more time getting to really know a place. Bearing this in mind, you could end up with a more varied and interesting itinerary and a richer travelling experience.

4. Beware of hidden or unplanned expenses such as international phone calls and internet access. Will it be cheaper to bring your mobile phone with you, or would it better to invest in a prepaid international phone card? Now would be the time to find out which option best suits you.

5. Student discounts and other such concessions will make a difference to your budget. Bring your concession cards along and make sure to ask for a discount before you hand over your money.

6. If you're travelling on the cheap, make time to get in touch with relatives and friends in the area for the use of their couch. You save yourself accommodation costs, not to mention possibly getting a free meal or two out of the bargain.

7. Do you have a safety net in case you run out of money? Find out about the availability of seasonal work before you leave home. Seasonal work such as fruit picking is useful for earning quick cash-some farms even provide food and accommodation. Picking Jobs [http://www.pickingjobs.com/] is a good resource, listing jobs from anywhere between Australia and South Africa.

8. While it's not advisable to rely on credit cards, they could prove useful in case of an emergency. Arranging to obtain your credit card and traveller's cheques with your bank before travelling might save you a lot of hassle in the future.

9. Send out information to your family and friends on how they can get money to you if you happen to need it. From bank wire transfer to using an agency such as Western Union, which one will best suit you?

10. Having travel insurance is absolutely crucial. A good policy covers you for the duration of your trip to all your destinations, work abroad, any sports and activities you might do including winter sports, your medical expenses, repatriation, travel and accommodation if you fall ill, reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen items, personal liability, and legal expenses.

content from : http://www.solotravel.org/10-money-tips-backpacker.htm

Eating Well on a Travel Budget

When you're traveling it can be difficult to find good food at reasonable prices
especially if you happen to be staying in a big city that has an established food and
restaurant culture. When you're faced with a budget, you want to try and maximize
your enjoyment per buck. If you want to eat well and sample the local cuisine for a
budget price, you'll need to do a little research to find that perfect restaurant that
offers a balance between quality and price.

First, check with your hotel or hostel and inquire whether breakfast is included in
your stay. In Europe many hotels provide breakfast. If you're hotel does provide
breakfast, don't skip it in favor for paying for food elsewhere. Some of my most
memorable meals were hostel breakfasts that were nothing more that a roll, butter,
jam and some coffee with milk. Hotel and hostel breakfasts are also a great way to
get to know other guests.

One option for budget eating is to eat at a chain restaurant that you a familiar with,
such as McDonald's, Burger King or Kentucky Fried Chicken. You can find a
McDonald's about anywhere world-wide. I made my way through Rome using a free
McDonald's map that in addition to indicating all the tourist attractions had a mark
for every McDonald's in Rome. However, if you want to become familiar with the
culture of the country you are visiting, eating at a fast food restaurant is not a good
option.

Another option is to buy groceries and make your own food. If you don't have a
fridge or hot plate in your hotel room, this option may not be very feasible. Still, you
can buy items that don't need to be heated and make a meal out of those. When I
was in Florence, a loaf of bread, parma ham and cheese coupled with a Chianti
made a very nice picnic that I enjoyed thoroughly. Make sure you try to sample
items from the local cuisine.

Eating one or two meals a day from a street vendor or take-out restaurant may also
be a good way to still eat great, but save some money. In Paris, I got great ham and
cheese sandwiches from a street vendor for lunch. They were delicious, kept me
going and didn't break the budget. When I was at a conference in Washington D.C., I
discovered a little convenience store that made fresh egg and cheese sandwiches on
toast to order. They sold them for only $2.00 and I ate there every morning.

In Rome, I discovered a little take-out pizza shop around the corner from the
Pantheon. The restaurant made pizzas on huge rectangular sheet pans and put
them in a deli case with a clear glass window. You could order by pointing to the
kind you wanted, motioning for how big you wanted your piece (they charge by
weight), and asking for it to be heated. Then you happily take your piece of pizza
over to the square, sit on the steps and enjoy.

Being friendly with other guests in the hotel, the concierge and the locals, is another
great way to discover good food that won't break the budget. Ask a local if they
know any good restaurants that aren't too expensive. They should be able to come
up with a few good options for you. Make sure you indicate that you want to sample
some local cooking. I've even known friends that have gotten themselves invited
over to dinner (not that this should be your objective).

Another good way to find inexpensive restaurants is to always be looking for a good
place to eat. If you're out visiting a tourist site, stop by a few restaurants and read
their menus (usually posted in the window). Even if you are not hungry, you may
decide to come back later. I've had better luck with this technique when I'm in an
area of the city that is not your standard tourist destination.

Eating in a sit-down full service restaurant is the most expensive dining option, so if
you are really on a budget, you may want to limit the number of full service meals
you eat. Also, in some countries eating at the counter is less expensive that sitting
at a table. By listening to recommendations and doing a little research, you can
avoid the expensive restaurants that cater to tourists.

If you're on a budget, you can still eat great during your travels, you just need to be
aware of all your food options. Ask around with locals for recommendations. Make
sure you know the price before you eat. Most important of all, try new things.
Stretch your boundaries and try something that you would never eat at home. After
all isn't the reason you travel is to discover something different.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jed_Clark

Primus Backpacker Stoves

Backpacking Stoves and How to Choose the Right One

What is the most popular backpacking stove in use today? Well, a quick trip into your local outdoor store will convince you that the liquid (white gas) and the canister (isobutane or propane) stoves dominate the shelf space. Two other stoves less common, but often used by the ultra-lite backpacker is the alcohol and hexamine. These two stoves although very light and cheap, are much less efficient with a much slower boil time, and for that reason I would not recommend these for the typical backpacker. When I am ready to eat, I want fuel efficiency and a fast boil time stove!

Where do you begin when choosing a backpacking stove? You should start with the kind of trip(s) you will be taking, a few days or a week or more. If you are going for an extended trip, make sure the fuel type is readily available. White gas and fuel canisters can usually be found in most trail towns and campground stores in the U.S. Outside the U.S. you might consider the more abundant liquid fuels. If cooking for just yourself, then a small stove is all you need. If cooking for two or more, you will need more fuel, a faster boil time, and possibly a larger cooking pot. How do you choose the fuel best suited for your typical trip? Liquid fuels work best in very cold weather, or below freezing. The MSR DragonFly or WhisperLite are very common among liquid fuel stove users. I personally think they are too noisy, have more maintenance issues, and I don't care for the messy liquid fuel. I must tell you though, that smelly fuel has come in handy on a wet cold rainy night when a fire was needed and the fuel was the catalyst for a great fire!

On recent trips to the backcountry, I have observed the canister type stoves as the stove of choice by the majority of backpackers. Why? It is simple, light, and has few, if any, maintenance issues. You simply turn the valve and light the stove (some even have an igniter) and you are ready to cook. Most of these stoves sit on top of the canister by screwing into the canister. While others are connected by a hose so the stove sits on the ground off to the side of the canister. There are two advantages to the hose type: stability of stove and the use of a windscreen. You never want to use a windscreen that covers the canister for risk of heat buildup around the canister. If choosing a canister, the blended fuel (isobutane or butane/propane) work well down to zero degrees, but pure butane will not work below freezing. My personal experience is that below 20 degrees the pressure of the canister can really start to drop. If the majority of my cooking was done below freezing, then I would opt for one of the cooking systems mentioned below. A trick I use if it is going to be cold at night is to put the fuel canister at the foot of my sleeping bag to keep it warm for better efficiency and performance in the morning. These stoves would include the MSR WindPro Stove, the MSR Pocket Rocket, or the Snow Peak Giga Power Stove.

The latest technology in award winning stoves is the "cooking system." These systems are usually a complete cooking setup that includes the pot, with lid, sometimes a fry pan, and stove in one system. These systems are designed so that maximum heat is transferred to the pot through an integrated heat exchanger which is usually connected to the bottom of the pot. These not only provide maximum heat transfer and fuel efficiency, but many incorporate an excellent windscreen. The fuel canister and stove usually stow inside the pot for a compact and secure transport. The MSR Reactor Stove System, the Jetboil Personal Cooking System, and the Primus EtaPower Easy Fuel Stove are all top performers if you are considering one of the new cooking systems.

What about weight and boil time? Excluding fuel, the liquid fuel stoves weigh about 14 to 17 ounces; the canister stoves around 3 to 7 ounces and the cooking systems around 15 to 29 ounces (remember these systems include a pot and lid). The boil times (time it takes to boil one liter of water) range from 2-1/2 minutes for one of the cooking systems, and between 3 to 4 minutes for the others, and of course, outside temperature and wind play a role in boil time.

One final recommendation, it is very important to make sure you understand how to correctly operate your stove so please familiarize yourself with it by reading the operation and maintenance instructions. Now you're ready to take the stove out into the backyard and fire it up for a test run. Bon appétit!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Norm_Sjodin

Buy Cheap Backpackers' Travel Insurance

Backpackers usually travel on a budget. But just like the average traveler, they are at a risk of injuries or accidents when abroad. Sometimes they're even at a greater risk because they go from one country to another.

Whether they're scuba diving in Cairns or trekking the slopes of Thailand, a traveler must have backpackers travel insurance. They tend to explore off the beaten tracks and if that is the case, then there is a higher possibility of them getting involved in robberies.

They are also prone to illnesses because they travel overnight or sleep in hostels or dorm rooms.

A practical traveler ensures that he is in good hands by purchasing backpackers travel insurance. He gets one before he leaves. Backpackers travel insurance is specifically designed to meet the needs of a traveler.

These plans offer high levels of coverage for long periods of travel. A traveler can get the backpackers travel insurance from one week to two years.

One must also remember that just because it's called backpackers travel insurance, it does not mean that they will be roughing it.

Backpackers travel insurance serves as a cheaper and effective alternative to single trip travel insurance plans. In fact, some plans cover extras like sports and ski protection.

They might need this along the way because no one knows what may happen while they are traveling. When looking for backpackers travel insurance, there are the standards that the traveler must look out for.

Here are some features that must be included in the backpackers travel insurance. First of all, it must have the Emergency Medical Cover. This covers the cost of any event that needs urgent medical attention.

It must also have Rescue and Repatriation. This is the insurance that the costs will be paid by the insurance provider. Since rescue comes with the package, this includes helicopter rescue as well.

Other features are Personal Liability. This means that the insurance provider is legally responsible to cover any injury, accident, or harm that might be inflicted on the traveler. Then there's Holiday Cancellation.

This is the need to make the trip short, just in case something comes up. The individual will then be compensated for the amount that was lost.

Also included in the insurance is the Baggage and Possessions Cover. Just in case the possessions of the traveler have been stolen or lost, then the insurance provider will cover the administrative costs that were incurred.

This includes paying for replacing the passport that has been stolen.

Discover where to buy cheap backpackers travel insurance online.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Ricky_Lim

Forest to Sea Adventures : Northern Part of Malaysia

If any of you guys and gals are planning to go to the northern part of Malaysia (especially Penang), and expecting some new experience there we are recommending you to visit the following blog.

http://forest2seaadventures.blogspot.com/

Actually the blog writer is a friend of mine. would not be complete without the budget accommodation that we require to keep us in the lifestyle to which we have become accustomed. The places we either love or hate, where we meet our new travelling mates, old friends from back home, clubbing buddies, future partners, flatmates and in some cases our future spouse. By spending less on our beds we hope to spend more on experiencing the local culture. In the following paragraphs there are a few suggestions to make that budget bed all the more bearable.

The quality of a youth hostel is not necessarily measured by the creature comforts it provides, such as high pressure hot showers or cable TV, but more by the people, the staff and fellow travellers that make your time there, however short, more memorable. Anyone who has spent an extended amount of time living in close quarters with other human beings will understand the physical and mental adjustments that come with it. You find out just how tolerant you really are and work out new ways to make it survivable.

You may have shared a bedroom with a sibling as a child but that does not really compare to sharing with possibly, for the first time, the opposite sex and from two or three people up to 20 or more. Most travellers just beginning their travels would be shocked and horrified at the thought of dressing and undressing in front of an audience let alone putting up with all the assorted habits of a diverse range of roommates. But after a few months on the road however it all becomes second nature.

Now, there has been a real renaissance in the European hostel industry recently with owners realising there is no longer a benefit in providing substandard type accommodation. The backpackers will vote with their feet and now thanks to the internet with their fingers to inform the rest of the world to avoid the place like the plague. Occasionally though you will find a bunch of individuals willing to tough it out in cramped rooms, less than sanitary bathrooms, and downright scary kitchens purely for the social atmosphere. They like who they are sharing with.

A single sex dorm is usually the first choice for many first timers, but don’t be fooled. Even those you would consider to maintain a reasonable standard of communal etiquette can turn out practically feral, girls included.

Tip one, keep an open mind on sharing. Small dorms are preferable over large ones even if they are more expensive. You get to know who you are sharing with pretty quickly and roommates are potential gold mines for additional travel information. Sharing with guys can also be a bonus. They usually know where all the fun is going on.

Here’s tip two. For those trying to maintain any kind of privacy hanging a sarong or large towel from the bunk above as a curtain is one option, provided you are on the bottom. The sarong is definitely preferable as it is light to carry. And if you only take a tiny travel towel that sprint to the bathroom for a shower is made a little easier if you can wear the sarong as a wraparound. It also doubles as shower curtain in some places. It is a very versatile piece of material.

Wearing flip-flops in the shower is another prime tip. Most places will ensure the showers are cleaned at least once a day but when you consider the high numbers of people using them as well coming from all over the world there is a risk eventually of coming into contact with a foot fungus. Not particularly fun nor easy to get rid of. The flip-flops keep your feet off the floor and hopefully further away from any risk of catching some fungal nasty.

Tip four is for those who are light sleepers or become homicidal axe wielding maniacs at the sound of ear drum splitting snorers- ear plugs. Brilliant on long haul flights as well these things may just save your sanity if the guy in the bunk above sounds like a chainsaw on full throttle at 4 in the morning.

Tip five is to carry some kind of a pocket knife. In this age of tightened airport security this may sound like the wrong advice but if it stored in your pack that is checked into the hold it should be ok. Some hostels have kitchen facilities but may lack in some vital utensils. Tin openers invariably never work, sharp knives aren’t, and sometimes even something as simple as a teaspoon may be non existent. A pocket knife with a decent blade length and can opener is invaluable.

Tip six is to make use of the safety deposit boxes where you are staying. Ok, not every roommate is a thief. We would like to believe all our fellow travellers are just like us, out to see the world, make new friends, experience new cultures and customs, find new horizons and for the majority that is correct. Nearly everyone you will come into contact with will have a similar attitude to travel as you and would never cheat a fellow backpacker. However there is a minority out there that can make it unpleasant for the rest of us. If you are staying somewhere with a pretty transient clientele, people arriving and leaving every five minutes put all the important stuff behind reception for peace of mind. It also makes sense when going out. Only take what you’re going to spend. Most places have safety boxes for free or a small fee.

Tip seven is to take your own padlock. Some places have lockers but rent out the padlocks. You may also want to consider some kind of backpack chain to secure the pack to the bunk if there is no locker and you don’t trust where you are staying. There are some fishing-net like chains specifically designed for packs available, fairly lightweight and they fit over your entire pack or case. Just don’t lose the keys.

Tip eight sounds strange but take a bungee cord. This is an elastic rope that can extend out to make a clothesline or curtain rail. Great if you have to do hand washing and can’t get to a dryer. It only needs to be about 1 metre long and preferably with clips or hooks at either end.

Tip nine is to take a sleep sheet and a pillow case. Most places provide linen now for an additional charge or even included in the price but where this isn’t available it is handy to have a sleep sheet. Some stores sell sleep sheets already made that are treated to prevent bed bugs or you can easily make your own by stitching a double sheet down one side. Smaller and lighter than carrying a sleeping bag and easier to wash, it is ideal for travel in the summer through hot destinations. A pillow case can be useful for making a pillow by stuffing it with clothes if there isn’t one and can even make do as an emergency towel.

Tip ten is to accept those differences. Hostels come in all shapes, sizes and styles. There can be good and bad hostels in large and small destinations. A large and popular hostel in the city may have less atmosphere than a tiny pension in a remote village. You may find the bar, party crowd and DJ downstairs impossible to leave after a week. You could also discover the cool Aussie, South African and Canadian guys you’ve been sharing a room with for a month want to go see the pyramids in September when you want to go and they have transport. You may even learn your roommate has more questionable personal habits than your own. All of these experience serve to teach us more about ourselves.

My last point is not a tip but the eleventh commandment, thou shalt not have any noisy plastic shopping bag of any sort in your backpack. Even the most mild mannered, easy going and placid individual will be itching to heave a meat cleaver between the ears of someone rummaging inside their plastic bags, especially if it is at 5am in the morning and all they can hear is the demented rustling of the plastic. If you must insist on having the damn thing at least drag the pack into the hallway to find what you are looking for and leave your roommates to sleep in peace. They will thank you for it.

Keep these in mind and whatever you discover through your hostelling experiences, about yourself and the rest of your fellow travellers, the good and the not so good, they will all remain an unforgettable part of your travelling adventures.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Katy_Hyslop

How to Use the Website Couchsurfing Safely!

Hotels are one of the largest day to day expenses travelers have and everyone is frequently looking for the cheapest place they can find. No matter what your accommodation tastes may be, one thing everyone has in common is that no one wants to pay a fortune for hostels. There are a few ways travelers can use to find affordable accommodation without forking over their entire vacation fund.

One of the best ways to get free accommodation is to stay with someone who lives where you're going via Couchsurfing. Couchsurfing connects travelers with people in various locations who offer a free place to stay. Sometimes it's a bed, sometimes it's a couch, sometimes it's literally just space. You get to meet a new friend and get a local perspective on local attractions and activities. It's a awesome way to mix up your travels between meeting people in hotels and meeting the locals.

A lot of times people are scared to couchsurf because they wonder if it's safe. There you are, in a new city with all your stuff (and you!) in a stranger's home. What if they try to murder you in your sleep? Steal your stuff? Sell your kidney? Don't worry! These people have the same fears as you. Remember, they don't know you either. Yet the people who would open their homes to strangers tend to be very open minded people and are usually former travelers themselves. They know what you are going through. They want to help. Moreover, Couchsurfing is aware of this and takes many steps to provide security. It offers various levels of verification and allow users to rate and leave comments on traveler's profiles. When couchsurfing, use the following criteria to help ensure safety:

There has to be a picture. This just shows me that it's a real person.

The profile has to be filled out. It shows they are interested and involved. Most people aren't going to spend the time to fill this out if they aren't going to be comfortable with strangers in their home.

They have to be verified. Couchsurfing offers different levels of verification. They can be verified by other travelers, with a mailing address, or credit card. Knowing that a person has been verified reduces the likelihood that they are going to be a crazy psycho killer.

They should have comments from other travelers. If other people have stayed with or have at least traveled with the host and were O.K., chances are you will be O.K. too.

No matter what it says in the person's profile, you need to use your judgment. I haven't heard of any really bad couchsurfing experiences besides the host was unfriendly. Often, you end up talking with people over e-mail and get to feel them out a bit about how they are. If it doesn't seem right, don't do it! Couchsurfing can be a great occasion to meet other locals and get the inside perspective of a city. However, it is important to use caution and exercise judgment when staying at stranger's home. Trust your instinct.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Matthew_Kepnes

Celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Hello peeps..

As I am writing this, there'll be another 2 days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. During this period, I'll try my best to snap pictures and put in this blog. At least, you can learn something about on how Malaysian muslim celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, compared to the other muslim countries.

By the way, I believe there will be numbers of open house in Kuala Lumpur . Open house = free marvelous local foods. Ohh, when we say open house that mean everybody is welcome regardless your race, ethnicity or religion. :). You may find many areas of KL quite conducive to walking. Areas like Chinatown, Little India, Jalan TAR and Bukit Bintang are perhaps best explored on foot. Buses are a cheap and efficient means of getting around KL. Travelling by IntraKota buses is often recommended as they do provide comfortable air-conditioned journeys with some respite from the intense city heat. Taxis, or teksi as they are commonly referred to as, are another efficient way of travelling within KL and, as the distances are not much, they are not expensive.

KL is a paradise for avid shoppers. Here you can come cross world-renowned designer labels and brands to exquisite made-in-Malaysia items and the highly competitive environment that exists among traders is a blessing in disguise to shoppers. Whether one is in a department store or at any one of KL''s famous night markets, the city will enthrall you. Malaysia is reasonably priced for electronics. However, if you are combining to KL with a trip to Singapore or Indonesia, shopping for electronic goods is best avoided in Malaysia, simply because it does not have the range or the competitive prices of the other two places. When in doubt, bargain. You’ll be surprized to discover that it works at most places, except at the malls and department stores, where bargaining is a complete no. It is wise to compare prices before you buy anything to ensure you get the best deal.

Handicrafts of local origin range from intricate silver, brass and pewter items to pottery, rattan and wickerwork. Malaysian Batiks, with their bold designs and dazzling colours set in silk and cotton, is a class apart from others within the region. Shoppers are constantly enticed by art objects and curio items from the orient which vie for attention with carpets and rugs of lustrous silk and fine wool that are invariably set in traditional designs. For the trendy there is ready-to-wear apparel of every design and colour and trendy shoes and handbags, some of which come from designer boutiques.

Traditionally, the main shopping areas in Kuala Lumpur are:

Jalan Tuanku Abd. Rahman which stretches from the Jalan Dang Wangi junction to Jalan Tun Perak. Here you can see several pre-war buildings whose gracious facades have been lovingly preserved. Out here you can hope to get antiques and curios, an irresistible collection of fine embroidered bed and table linen, carved rosewood furniture, chests and cabinets, Chinese ceramics and jade and ivory carvings, oriental carpets and ethnic goods of Indian origin, sarees, sarongs and textiles.

Jalan Bukit Bintang - the ''Golden Mile'' of Kuala Lumpur - this place has ultra-modern shopping and commercial complexes, interspersed with towering international standard hotels. Shoppers can spend hours browsing through the shops of Lot 10, Sungei Wang Plaza, Bukit Bintang Plaza and Kuala Lumpur Plaza.

Petaling Street and Jalan Bandar are at the hub of Kuala Lumpur''s bustling Chinatown. Here shoppers can get a variety of textiles, clothes, shoes and handbags at bargain prices, jewellery shops with their fascinating variety of fine jewellery items beautifully crafted in gold and set with priceless gemstones, wall hangings, ornaments, curios and teapots from India and Burma. Be sure to hone your bargaining skills before entering this area. The place becomes livelier at night with stalls offering a diverse range of products come up.

The weather in KL is difficult to predict – a cloudless blue sky may suddenly turn black and before you know it you may be caught in a torrential downpour. It rains all through the year. However, they rarely last for very long.

Because of its myriad cultures, Malaysia is a country renowned for its creative, complex, and lovingly prepared original cuisine. Sauces tend to be highly developed, often incorporating local fruits and spices. ‘Must tries’ - Satay, and Laksa. However, for those in a hurry, the usual icons - McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken - are always available.

article taken from http://www.domain-b.com/leisure/travel/kltips.html

Rooftop Garden

Backpacker Magazine is an American publication that features information on wilderness hiking and adventure.
